Week of 1/30-2/3

Spelling– Here are our spelling words for this week.
New words: number, old, went, off, again
Review words: were, when, which, their, many, time, very, where, our, also, take

Reading– This week we will start a nonfiction unit on Polar Bears.

Math– We will continue subtraction with regrouping

Week of 1/23- 1/27

Spelling/Phonics– No spelling test this week. We are learning about the prefixes: un-, pre-, re-, dis-. A prefix changes the meaning of a word.
Ex. reread means to read again.
re- again
pre- before
dis- not, or the opposite of
un- not, or the opposite of

Reading– This week we are learning about inferencing. You make an inference when you use clues from the story to figure out something that the author doesn’t directly tell you.

Math– We are starting subtraction with regrouping (we use to call it borrowing when we were kids). Here are some rhymes we are using in class to help us remember.

1. If there is more on the top, no need to stop!

2. If the numbers are the same, then zero is the game!

3. If there’s more on the floor, go next door and get ten more!

1/16-1/20

Spelling- We have a spelling test this week. Here are our words:
New words: away, different, put, help, why
Review words: are, there, about, only, way, find, use, too, think, because, here

Reading- We are learning about fables and that there is always a lesson or moral to the story.

Math- We are beginning two digit subtraction without regrouping this week and then we will begin two digit addition with regrouping next week.

*Reminder that January 25th is an early release day at 11:30.

Week of 1/9- 1/13

Spelling/Phonics– We do not have a spelling test this week. We are learning about contractions. Ex. can + not = can’t

Reading– We are doing TPRI Testing and so I will not be meeting with guided reading groups, therefore, your child will be responsible for choosing their own book to read at home. During our reading time we are continuing our unit on Fairy Tales and we are also writing our own fairy tales.

Math- This week we are continuing graphs (Collecting Data, Tally Charts, Pictographs and Bar Graphs).

Homework Week of 1/2-1/6

Spelling/Phonics– We have a spelling test this week so here are our words for the week.
New words: take, here, such, well, place
Review words: there, each, more, make, water, around, three, must, even

Reading- We have a new reading log for the month of January, please read 20 minutes daily. This week in reading our focus is Fairy Tales and the characteristics that make a story a fairy tale.

Math– Our focus this week is learning about the different types of graphs (Tally Chart, Bar Graph and Pictograph). We will also be taking surveys in class to learn how to collect data for our graphs.
