Reading/Writing

Our focus this week is Inferencing or what it means to Infer.  When you make an Inference you use the clues from the story plus what you already know to figure out something that the author doesn’t directly tell you.  The stories we will be reading to help us with our inferencing skills is: A Weekend With Wendall by Kevin Henkes,  Horace and Morace, but Mostly Dolores by James Howe and Miss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard.

In writing we are learning that a Common Noun is a person, place or thing and that a Proper Noun is a special name for a common noun.  We are also learning that a Verb is an action word or something that a noun does.

Math

For the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on Place Value up to 1,200 or the Thousands Place.  We will learning how to show our numbers in different ways, whether it be Standard Form= 386, Pictorial Form= Drawing the numbers using base ten blocks, Expanded Form= 300+80+6 or Written Form= Three Hundred Eighty-Six.

School Cancelled Tomorrow (8-27)

Message from Mr. Gray:

White Oak ISD Community,

While it is difficult to predict the weather, due to Hurricane Laura, I am concerned about the possibility of heavy rain and wind tomorrow morning (Thursday) when our route buses will be on the road, along with the real possibility of an extended power outage on one or more campuses.  After consultation with local officials and other area school districts, White Oak ISD has determined that it is in the best interest of safety that we close school tomorrow, Thursday, August 27.  We wanted to send this out tonight so that parents would have an opportunity to make any arrangements necessary.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thank you for your continued support of White Oak ISD.

Week of 8/24-8/28

I apologize for just now posting this but my daughter had a volleyball game yesterday and we didn’t make it home until late last night.

Week of 8/17 – 8/21

Hello,

This is our weekly newsletter/lesson plans for our classroom.  I will be posting it on my blog and on Seesaw.  I will be posting information about what we are doing in Spelling/Phonics, Reading/Writing, Math and any important information or dates such as holidays, half days, etc.  We are also starting homework this week as well.

Homework

Our homework will be the same most weeks.  They will have a Reading Log that will need to be filled out, signed and returned daily. If your child brings their reading log back daily with it signed they will received a ticket from me.  Earning those tickets is important to them because they get to turn them in on Friday’s for lots of fun things (treasure box, take shoes off, bring stuffed animal, etc.) Please make sure that your child reads at least 20 minutes a day.  These first couple of weeks they may read a book from home or I will send a book that they have chosen from their book box.  When we start Guided Reading Groups then they will be bringing home books that are on their level.  They will also have a Math homework sheet that is front and back.  It is a paper that they can work at at their own pace.  They will receive a new one every Monday and then it is due Friday morning.  They may complete it and return any day of the week.  If they finish Monday night they can turn it in on Tuesday, if they finish by Wednesday they may turn it in on Thursday, etc.  as long as it is completed and turned in by Friday morning.  They will have a spelling test every Friday and so studying their spelling words is also part of their weekly homework.

Spelling/Phonics

Your child has written their spelling words in their planner for this week.  I will also post the words on the blog just in case they copied it down incorrectly.  Our focus in phonics are CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant)words: ex.  cat.  Usually our last 3 words are Word Wall Words- meaning they are on our Word Wall and they are words they should already know how to spell from 1st grade. Our words this week are:

  1. cap
  2. mix
  3. stop
  4. dug
  5. met
  6. flag
  7. best
  8. had
  9. but
  10. can
  11. did
  12. up
  13. has
  14. him

Reading/Writing

We are learning that “Reading is Thinking”.  When you are reading you are making predictions, connects, inferring, visualizing, summarizing and asking questions.  We are learning how to choose a “Good Fit Book” and what is a “Real Reader vs. Fake Reader”.

Math

In math this week we are learning about Doubles (6+6=12) and Doubles +/-1 (8+8=16, 8+9=17) or (8+8=16, 8+7=15)

Please have your child practice their doubles facts.
