Reading

We are reading a chapter book called The Magic Tree House: Pilgrims, a nonfiction book about the Pilgrims voyage on the Mayflower and how the Native Americans taught them to grow and plant crops in the new land.  

 

Math

We are continuing our lesson on counting a collection of coins using quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.

Reading/Writing:

This week in reading we are learning about Author’s Purpose: (P)ersuade, (I)nform, (E)ntertain 

In writing we are creating books about “How to Catch a Turkey”.  We are brainstorming lots of creative ways to catch a turkey and then writing our own stories using one of those ideas.

 

Math:

We are continuing to learn how to count a collection of coins.  Last week we introduced the coins and learned how to count pennies, nickels and dimes.  This week we added quarters and so it’s getting a little more challenging.  Please practice counting a collection of coins, especially using quarters.  We always start with the coin of highest value to the coin of least value.  Practice skip counting by 5’s and 10’s, starting at a number higher than 5 or 10.  Ex. 20, 30, 40  or  35, 40, 45, 50

Reading

We are continuing our lesson on finding the Main Idea and 3 Supporting Details in a story or passage.

 

Math

We are starting our unit on identifying and counting a collection of coins.  Please practice counting coins at home with your child.  One of the strategies we are learning this week is called Hairy Money, each coin gets a hair or hairs that are worth 5 each and a penny gets a dot.  See example picture below.

Read-A-Thon

The White Oak Primary Read-A-Thon fundraiser began Monday, October 19th, and will continue through Sunday, October 25th. An instruction sheet was sent home last week with each student for this fundraiser. Please take time to read over this sheet, set up your child’s personal Read-A-Thon page online, and start asking for donations from family and close friends. Thank you for your help in making this fundraiser a success for your child and our school!

NEW WATER BOTTLE REFILL STATION!!!

*Starting this week your child will need to bring a refillable water bottle to school.  The school will no longer be providing water bottles to those students who do not bring one.  We have a new touchless water bottle refill station for students to be able to refill their water bottles.  Due to COVID restrictions, students are not allowed to use water fountains.

We are continuing our study about Bats by reading nonfiction books and writing about Bats based on information we have learned.  We will also read Stellaluna, a fiction book about a bat named Stellaluna.  We will then compare Stellaluna and our nonfiction books about Bats to see how they are the same and how they are different.

 

Math

This week we are learning how to solve word problems with a missing addend.  We are also reviewing all the math concepts that we have been working on this first 9 weeks of school.

Phonics/Spelling

This week we are learning about Homophones.  Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelling differently and have differently meanings.  Ex. to, two & too; their, there & they’re.  Our spelling words this week are High Frequency/Word Wall Words.  Here is our list of words for this week:

Reading/Writing

We are still learning about the differences between Fiction & Nonfiction books.  We are also learning about and researching information about Bats.  They might come home this week talking about Bats and some of the interesting information we have learned about them.  After we are done doing our Bat research we will then write a paper about what we have learned.

This week our focus will be learning how to find the missing addend.  There are 3 strategies we will learn this week to help find the missing addend.

Our focus this week will be Even/Odd numbers and knowing which numbers are odd and which numbers are even. We will also be reviewing for our Math Benchmark test that is coming up toward the end of the 9 weeks.
