Spelling/Phonics

This week’s focus is on the long a sound using “ai” & “ay”.  Here is our list of words for this week:

Reading

We are continuing our focus on dialogue this week by reading Creepy Carrots.  We will be using different tones in our voice while reading to emphasize what the character is thinking and how the character is feeling. 

 

Math

We are continuing to learn about graphs.  Last week we learned how to take a survey, make a tally chart and then use the data to complete a bar graph.  This week we are learning about Pictographs (Picture graphs).  A pictograph is a graph that uses pictures to show the data collected.  The key on a pictograph shows what picture is being used throughout the graph and what the value of each picture represents.

Reading

Our focus this week is Dialogue, what it looks like and sounds like when reading a story.  We will discuss how dialogue between two or more characters can be shown using speech bubbles and quotation marks or talking marks.  When a character is talking we read with more expression or use the correct expression.  Whether the character is just talking, yelling, asking a question or showing excitement.

 

Math

For the next couple of weeks we will be learning about tally charts, bar graphs and picture graphs (pictographs).  This week we are learning how to collect data by conducting surveys, organizing our data or information using tally charts and then putting that information on a bar graph.

Reading

This week we are reading and learning about Stellaluna, a bat who thinks she’s a bird.  We will be comparing bats to birds and making a foldable with lots of different activities.

Fire Prevention Week

All Primary Students will be taking a trip to the White Oak Fire Station on Tuesday, October 15th.  2nd Grade will be visiting from 9:45-10:30 and we will be taking buses.  Since it is a short trip, we will not need parent chaperones. Please send a pair of socks with your child if they don’t wear them on that day because we will also have bounce houses.

Reading

We are continuing our focus on nonfiction text.  We are reading, discussing and researching bats.  We are also writing what we are learning about bats as we research.

 

Math

We are learning about Part/Part/Whole and Missing Addends.  We are learning 3 strategies to help up find the missing part or addend in our addition problem.

  1. Counting on or counting up using the part and the whole
  2. Drawing the whole and circling the part we know to find the part we don’t know
  3. Subtracting the part we have from the whole to get the missing part (addend)
